Absorption and metabolism of volatile fatty acids by rumen and omasum Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Daniel,João Luiz Pratti; Resende Júnior,João Chrysostomo de.
Volatile fatty acids (VFA) absorption and metabolic capacity of rumen and omasum were compared, in vitro. Fragments of rumen wall and omasum laminae were taken from eight adult crossbred bovines. An isolated fragment of the mucosa was fitted in a tissue diffusion chamber. Valeric acid and CrEDTA were added to ruminal fluid and placed on the mucosal side and buffer solution was placed on the serosal side. Fractional absorption rates were measured by exponential VFA:Cr ratio decay over time. Metabolism rate was determined as the difference between VFA absorbed and VFA which appeared on the serosal side over time. Mitotic index was higher in omasum (0.52%) than in rumen epithelium (0.28%). VFA fractional absorption rate was higher in omasum (4.6%/h.cm²) than...

Acclimation of the marine diatom Pseudo‐nitzschia australis to different salinity conditions: effects on growth, photosynthetic activity and domoic acid content ArchiMer
Ayache, Nour; Hervé, Fabienne; Lundholm, Nina; Amzil, Zouher; Caruana, Amandine.
oxic Pseudo‐nitzschia australis strains isolated from French coastal waters were studied to investigate their capacity to adapt to different salinities. Their acclimation to different salinity conditions (10, 20, 30, 35 and 40) was studied on growth, photosynthetic capacity, cell biovolume and domoic acid (DA) content. The strains showed ability to acclimate to a salinity range from 20 to 40, with optimal growth rates between salinities 30 and 40. The highest cell biovolume was observed at the lowest salinity 20 and was associated with the lowest growth rate. Salinity did not affect the photosynthetic activity; Fv/Fm values and the pigment contents remained high with no significant difference among salinities. An enhanced production of zeaxanthin was,...

Are experienced and high-level race walking athletes able to match pre-programmed with executed pacing? BJMBR
Alves,D.L.; Cruz,R.; Lima-Silva,A.E.; Domingos,P.R.; Bertuzzi,R.; Osiecki,R.; De-Oliveira,F.R.; Lima,J.R.P..
The objective of this study was to verify the agreement between pre-programmed and executed pacing during race walking and whether level of the athletes experience and performance influenced this relationship. Twenty-nine national and international race walkers participated in this study (14 males, 24.0±7.1 years old, and 15 females, 23.3±7.3 years old). Pre-programmed pacing for 10- and 20-km official walking races was self-selected via demonstrative pacing charts prior to races, while executed pacing was analyzed by a specialist investigator via an individual plot of current velocity versus distance. There was no agreement between pre-programmed and executed pacing (P=0.674). There was no association between the ability to match the pre-programmed pace...

Balneola vulgaris gen. nov., sp nov., a member of the phylum Bacteroidetes from the north-western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Urios, Laurent; Agogue, Hélène; Lesongeur, Francoise; Stackebrandt, Erko; Lebaron, Philippe.
A novel aerobic, Gram-negative bacterium, named 13IX/A01/164(T), was isolated from surface waters in the coastal north-western Mediterranean Sea. Cells were motile, straight rods, 2-5 mu m long and 0-2 mu m wide, and formed orange colonies on marine agar medium. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain 13IX/A01/164T was 42 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence placed the strain in the phylum Bacteroidetes within the family Crenotrichaceae. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence comparison and physiological and biochemical characteristics, this isolate represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Balneola vulgaris gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Balneola vulgaris is 13IX/A01/164T (=DSM 17893T=CIP...

Bases génétiques des caractères physiologiques impliqués dans la croissance chez l'huître creuse Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) ArchiMer
Collet, Bertrand.
Growth is a very important trait in the oyster Crassoslrea gigas both from an economical and scientific point of view. Many questions remain unanswerable or are still discussed . From a hatchery-based population, the constancy in time of growth performances From larval to adult stage was studied. The influence of physiological parameters (energy acquisit ion and expenditure) and parentage on growth was estimated. ln the literature, the relationship between larval growth and post-Iarval growth is debated . Our study shows that the larval growth is positively correlated with the post-Iarval growth. This result validates the hatchery practices consisting in culling the small larvae. The growth performances are stable over the time and show no compensation....

Biological, physiological, immunological and nutritional assessment of farm-reared Litopenaeus stylirostris shrimp affected or unaffected by vibriosis ArchiMer
Mugnier, Chantal; Justou, Carole; Lemonnier, Hugues; Patrois, Jacques; Ansquer, Dominique; Goarant, Cyrille; Le Coz, Jean-rene.
Shrimp aquaculture in New Caledonia is subject to seasonal mortalities during grow-out due to highly virulent Vibrio nigripulchritudo (Vn). To understand the mechanisms affecting shrimp resistance and leading to significant mortality, a shrimp ecophysiology and immunology survey was conducted on two farms, the first considered as a "control" farm (HC), the second affected by the disease (DF). Mortality observed during the survey at DF started 50 days after stocking and was typical of this disease. The main observations regarding shrimp were: (a) growth was not affected by the disease and was faster in the DF than in the HC pond; (b) disease did not affect one sex more than the other, or a specific part of the population in terms of weight; (c) the physical...

Biomass distribution and physiological capabilities of bacteria in the water column above a sea grass system. ArchiMer
Velimirov, B; Herndl, G; Kavka, G.
The distribution pattern of bacteria in the water column above and within a Posidonia oceanica bed near Ischia (off the Gulf of Naples) was investigated and correlated with DOC and POM data for autumn and winter. Data from samples of 5 stations along a transect from shallow to deep showed rather low bacterial densities (10 super(4).ml super(-1)) for both seasons. The number of attached bacteria was higher in late winter as compared to autumn when the leaves are shed from the stands. Except for occasional peaks DOC ranged between 1.5 and 4.5 mg C/1 while POM concentrations ranged form 4 to 14 mg AFDW.1 super(-1). Hydrolytic capabilities of isolated bacterial colonies showed that more carbohydrate substrates could be fermented in winter as compared to...

Characteristics of a β-1,4-D endoglucanase from Trichoderma virens wholly applied in a palm-fruit husk-based diet for poultry layers BJM
Odeniyi,Olubusola A.; Onilude,Anthony A.; Ayodele,Maria A..
The characteristics of an endoglucanase produced by a Trichoderma virens strain T9 newly isolated from a palm-fruit husk dump site, its physiological characteristics and enzyme production were studied. Whole cells of the depolymerizing-enzyme producing T. virens were applied to palm-fruit husk and bird performance characteristics when employed as poultry diet additive were considered. Endoglucanase activity in submerged fermentation was 1.6 nkat. Optimum activity was recorded at pH 6.0 and 55ºC. The enzyme retained 50% residual glucanase activity at 70ºC for 10 minutes. 1.0% Tween-80 and SDS yielded endoglucanase activity 2.15 times higher than the control. Activity wasboosted by 20mM Ca2+ (115.0%); 10mM K+ (106.5%); and was totally inhibited by 1mM Hg2+....
